Brandy wants a Sitcom

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Despite being best-known for her music, Brandy has also been a force in television, too. Before the release of her debut album, Brandy starred in the short-lived "Thea." Then, following the release and promotion of her debut album, she landed her own sitcom. After being pitched to CBS in 1995, "Moesha" ended up on UPN in 1996.

"Moesha," a family sitcom centered around the eldest daughter, portrayed by Brandy, became a major hit for the new network. Most family sitcoms revolved around the adults. This sitcom stuck out because of its new approach. The topics discussed in the show landed critical acclaim.

For five years, Brandy captivated the hearts and minds of viewers outside of the black community as well as inside the black community. The show ended up being more successful than her music career and this led to Brandy taking a break from the music. The show was set to last long past 2001 until fighting ended the show.

Amidst rumors of Brandy being pregnant and her constant fights with cast-mates, UPN cut their losses as the show plummeted in the ratings. With no sitcom carrying her, Brandy returned to her music and created the futuristic Full Moon album. Even after releasing her album, she still longed to star in a sitcom. In 2005, there were rumors of her starring in a sitcom on The WB. Three years later, there were rumors of Brandy starring in a sitcom on The CW. Even last year, it was said that she would star in an ABC sitcom.

With all of those rumors, nothing has come yet. Perhaps hoping that something will come of these rumors, Brandy has said herself that she wants a new sitcom to star in. Now that such networks as BET, TV One, and True Black Television are in the market for new original sitcoms, she may land a deal for a new program.
