In the span of six years, Tyler Perry has built a powerhouse film company. Each year, since 2006, Perry releases two films a year. While the movies have not had the best critical reception, Tyler Perry's films have all been box office hits.

Despite making the black community laugh and cry with such precision over the past few years, Perry is facing a major backlash. Recently, Tyler Perry finally confronted fellow filmmaker, Spike Lee.

While some black media outlets are against Tyler Perry, BET has been among his biggest supporters. Perry is up for several film nominations at the 2011 BET Awards. For years, his films have been nominated for BET Awards.

As usual, Tyler Perry leads the BET Awards in film nominations, facing competition from Takers, The Book of Eli, and Death at a Funeral.

Years of bickering between Tyler Perry and Spike Lee have hit a new peak right before the start of summer. Spike Lee has been insulting the work of Tyler Perry ever since 2008. Perry has kept silent about these comments, for the most part. But, he recently reached his wits end and told Lee to go straight to hell.

For both of their styles to be for entertainment purposes only, both men are taking things a little too seriously. Spike Lee needs to accept there are different types of black filmmakers. Instead of his constant criticism of Tyler Perry, Lee needs to get back to making his own classic films.

Yesterday, JR posted an article which stated how important both filmmakers are to the black community. Apparently, Mo'Nique feels the same way. After interviewing Tyler Perry, Mo'Nique has decided she wants to have both Perry and Spike Lee visit the set of "The Mo'Nique Show." She hopes their visit will lead to an end to their feud.

Spike Lee is known for making serious movies and he should continue to make serious movies. Tyler Perry is known for making comedy movies and he should continue making comedies. If anything, the two should collaborate on their films. Lee helped open the door for filmmakers such as Tyler Perry and Perry has taken things to the next level with his deals with Lionsgate Entertainment and TBS. The two should be mentoring the next filmmaker who will make even more history.

Black Entertainment needs Tyler Perry

Monday, May 2, 2011

There are those who adore Tyler Perry, those who tolerate him, and those who hate him. However, there is not a single person who can deny him. Perry has risen to become a power player in the entertainment industry. With no business plan, Tyler Perry has become a man worth over $600 million.

Tyler Perry has made his millions telling Southern stories through film, adapted from his plays. When he was still rising in the game, many other black filmmakers supported Perry. Now that he is on top, he is in the middle of a ridiculous feud with Spike Lee. Lee was the Tyler Perry of his time.

Spike Lee's films have all been met with critical acclaim, whole all of Tyler Perry's films have been critically panned. Despite the poor response, Perry has yet to have a film not be a box office success. His films may portray black people in a less-than-desirable way, but in economic times like these, everyone needs a laugh.

The feud between Spike Lee and Tyler Perry is senseless because there is more than enough space for both of them to make their own kind of films. If there was a feud going on between Jerry Bruckheimer and Steven Spielberg, the media would be outraged. Black entertainment needs Tyler Perry because of all the records he is setting. Black entertainment also needs Spike Lee, his films are classics and more from him are needed. In addition to more Spike Lee films, black entertainment needs him to lay off Tyler Perry and focus on his own work.

Among the many successful Tyler Perry films, one of his more popular ones have been the Why Did I Get Married? series. The way the movies portray the committed relationship had a deep connection with the fans. Tyler Perry capitalized off the success of the 2007 film with a 2010 sequel.

Tyler Perry built his empire off his successful stage plays. The plays landed him a film deal with Lionsgate. Following a string of successful films, Tyler Perry took his profits and he invested in sitcoms. These sitcoms have found a stable home with TBS and has allowed Tyler Perry to expand.

Despite all of his success, Tyler Perry has had to deal with a major backlash. While many adore his films and television projects, many dislike his work. Many members of the black community say Perry's work is very demeaning. Fellow black filmmaker, Spike Lee, often refers to Perry's work as "coonery."

Recently, Perry called Lee out on this and now he has moved on. Once again capitalizing off the success of his film series, Why Did I Get Married?, Tyler Perry is adapting the film for a sitcom, "For Better or Worse." Tyler Perry tells Spike Lee to go "Straight to Hell"

Thursday, April 21, 2011

For the past three years, the two biggest black filmmakers, Tyler Perry and Spike Lee, have been trading insults. Their feud was ignited when Spike Lee said Tyler Perry's work was coonery. Perry has received negative criticism for his movies portraying blacks as idiots.

Spike Lee was considered the premier black filmmaker of the mid-1980s until the late 1990s. But, Tyler Perry solidified himself in the 2000s. Six years making films, Tyler Perry has yet to have one not be a box office hit. In spite of all his success, Spike Lee has not had anything nice to say.

Throughout his career, Tyler Perry has been criticized by the black community for his work. To Perry, it is confusing because other races do not overreact when their race puts out movies and television programs. After all he has done for the black community, including giving back, he cannot figure out why he is criticized so harshly.

In a recent meeting in California, Tyler Perry finally had enough. When Spike Lee's name came up, Perry said he can go straight to hell. Tyler Perry said Spike Lee has spoken negatively about Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Clint Eastwood. With so much said, Tyler Perry said Lee needs to shut the hell up and sit down somewhere. Tyler Perry said all great blacks have gone through this, but he is very frustrated with the reception his work gets after he puts so much into it.

Idris Elba calls out Tyler Perry and Martin Lawrence

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

The black film industry has been on the decline for well over ten years. During the late 1980s, Spike Lee led a revolution in the film industry. Many black filmmakers followed in Lee's footsteps, making classic movies. Along the way, several comedy films were made, too.

It seems as if the 1990s were the peak of black America, in many ways. All of the hard work during the Civil Rights Movement and in the 1970s led up to the 1990s. But, when it was time to pass the baton into the 21st Century, it seems as if the black community missed the boat.

Four years ago, Idris Elba broke into the spotlight with his supporting role on American Gangster. Sharing scenes with the legendary Denzel Washington led many people to crown Elba as the second coming. In the time since American Gangster, Idris Elba has had starring roles in quite a few movies, including one opposite Beyonce in Obsessed.

But, the primary black filmmakers have been Tyler Perry and a few other names. Perry is known for jumping into his blue dress to portray Madea. Martin Lawrence has starred in several comedy films, throughout the late 1990s and throughout the 2000s, and has dressed up as women. Lawrence recently launched his own film company and he is currently promoting his Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son movie. The film is expected to be a seller, along with the Perry films, but not everyone is impressed.

Idris Elba recently spoke out against the Tyler Perry and Martin Lawrence films. Elba said it is time for both filmmakers to grow up. He said the Tyler Perry movies and the upcoming Big Mommas film are "buffoonish" and he is not impressed. Elba feels it is time for Tyler Perry, especially, to expand the type of films he creates in order to elevate the art. While his words came off a little harsh, Idris Elba was only offering a form of constructive criticism.
