Mo'Nique is awarded for "Precious"

Last year, Precious turned heads for its harsh realities of how life is for some people in the ghetto. The film revolved around a young, obese, lady named Precious, that was the mother of three children. The father of her children were her own father, which made her children her half-siblings. While the father would drop in to rape Precious, the title character, the pieces were picked up by Mo'Nique, who played the mother. Because she was more attractive than her mother to her father, she was often beaten by her mother.

When the film was released to the public, it was met with critical acclaim. In her acting debut, Gabourney Sidibe, received a lot of acclaim, but that was overshadowed by the acting of Mo'Nique. Before her role in Precious, Mo'Nique was best-known for her acting skills from a comedic point of view. She had starred in her own sitcom, before moving on to films, all of which were comedies. It came as a shock to many when it was revealed that Mo'Nique would be playing in Precious.

There was never any doubt that Mo'Nique was a good actress, but it was doubted that she could make the transition from comedy to drama in such a convincing fashion. Some dramatic actresses could not have played the role any better than Mo'Nique. After watching the film, a lot of people were convinced about Mo'Nique and her acting skills. Because of this, many felt that she was deserving of an Academy Award. Last night, the award show took place and Mo'Nique won the award for Best Supporting Actress.
